Welcome to our monthly recap on all of the traditional and web2 brands making moves into this thing we’re calling the metaverse, and when we say metaverse we’re not just referring to virtual worlds but the broader web3 landscape, including NFTs, social tokens, DAOs, and crypto more broadly.
With that, here’s what’s been happening in the past month.
Warner Bros. announced it is collaborating with the NFT focused social media platform Nifty’s and at the end of June, the two firms will launch a story-driven NFT collection called “Looney Tunes: What’s Up Block?” The upcoming NFTs will tell a unique Looney Tunes storyline and will also celebrate the character Tweety’s 80th anniversary. Rewards and benefits include special access to Looney Tunes merchandise, access to virtual meet and greets, alongside never-before-been-seen content, and new NFT drops.
Italian luxury fashion brand Prada has hopped on the Web3 bandwagon with a new NFT collection and a dedicated Discord channel. The new NFT collection has been named Timecapsule.
Timecapsule NFTs, as per a press release by the company, will be a monthly online event lasting 24 hours on the first Thursday of each month, during which an exclusive item will be made available in very limited quantities on Prada's official website in select regions.
Every limited-edition Timecapsule item is assigned a unique serial number and comes in distinctive packaging. READ MORE
The trio have announced plans to work together on the Valley of Belonging, a diversity, equity and inclusivity space within the metaverse that is set to launch June 24, in line with Pride Month.
Nyx will be the first cosmetics brand to integrate into The Sandbox with a campaign that highlights the message that makeup has no gender. A total of 8,430 non-binary NFTs will be available from June 17 onwards, and will feature voxelised makeup looks for each group represented in the Pride flag. READ MORE
One of the most recent automakers to join the NFT and metaverse space, The DeLorean Motor Company, notably the DMC DeLorean, is most famously featured as the time machine in the Back to the Future film trilogy.
The DeLorean is one of the most iconic on-screen cars of all time, thanks to its role in the film series, and the company behind the car has filed two trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on May 30 for both DMC and DeLorean.
The application signals plans for virtual cars, NFT-backed media and stores offering virtual cars. READ MORE
The NFL and NFL Players Association announced a new partnership with gaming technology studio Mythical Games to introduce an NFT-based video game called NFL Rivals.
The game will officially launch in 2023, but fans will have an opportunity to purchase 32 limited-quantity collections of 3D NFL-themed NFTs in a series of drops prior to the game's release.
The actual game itself will allow fans to compete against other gamers as the general manager of a team in a fantasy-style environment while assembling rosters with NFTs of their favourite players through a play-and-own system. READ MORE
Luxury brand Gucci has announced that it will accept cryptocurrency payments at select locations.For the pilot project, customers will be able to pay with cryptocurrency at locations in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta and Las Vegas.
Customers will soon be able to pay for their purchases with over 10 cryptocurrencies, including widely recognized coins like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and 5 USD-pegged stablecoins (GUSD, USDC, USDP, DAI and BUSD). But the brand is also accepting payment from more niche cryptocurrencies, like Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB). READ MORE
